Case Study

Project Sheffield

Project: Stabilisation of an existing 10m high mudstone and shale slope with soil nails, erosion matting and rock mesh on a live supermarket petrol station site.
Location: Sheffield
Contract Duration: 2 Weeks
Anchors Installed 50
Area Treated: 150m2
Equipment: Access platform and Turmag pneumatic drill

We were employed to stabilise an existing mudstone and shale bank up to 10m in height which had weathered and was collecting behind an existing boundary fence and spalling onto the petrol station forecourt area below, posing a potential risk to vehicles, shoppers and employees. The slope was re-profiled to remove any loose material and shallow resin fixed soil nails and high tensile rock mesh with tensioning boundary ropes were installed to prevention of further spalling of the face of this slope through weathering and frost action. Glass fibre nail components and air powered tools were used to remove any risk associated with the potential of sparking and fire hazard during installation. Access was limited both in time and space available as the existing premises had to remain open and serviceable to Sainsbury’s customers and delivery vehicles throughout the duration of the works on site.
