We were employed to stabilise an existing chalk bank up to 10m in height which had weathered and was spalling into the car park area below, posing a potential risk to vehicles and residents of the retirement property. Access to the working area was restricted both by the need to access the car park under existing buildings and the need to maintain safe access and egress for residents and emergency vehicles. A rotary access platform was used to provide access to the full face of the slope and the drilling works were carried out using a hand held Holman drill from within the man basket. The existing small trees and shrubs at the top and on the face of the slope had to be removed, chipped and taken off site before the stabilisation work could take place with care taken not to destabilise the bank by removing existing root systems. The bank was then stabilised with the installation of soil nails, erosion matting and rock netting to protect the existing face and retain any material which might spall in the future. The erosion matting and rock netting were secured using load nuts with a boundary cable fitted to the full perimeter of the works. The matting and netting were extended over the platform at the top of the slope up to the site boundary with pea gravel over to minimise future plant growth. Brick stitching was also carried out the boundary wall at the top of the slope to repair existing cracks.
